page What's
happening with your web site?
- I'm in the middle of a
complete revision of our web site. When you own a small business store
like Hometown, there's always more to do than there are hours in the
day. Much of our old web site had gotten very out of date and the
site wasn't organized well enough to keep it updated efficiently.Im
trying to create a new site that gives an accurate overview of the
store but doesn't have so much information it's not possible to keep
it updated
Back to top of
page Is
this everything you sell?
- No. It's not possible
to list everything we sell, especially while we are revamping the
web site. We'll try to get an overview of the basic categories of
items and brands we stock listed, but it will take a while to cover
everything.
- If you live in the Harrisonburg
area we'd like to encourage you to come visit our store and see what
we have. We believe it will be worth your time.

What
are your prices?
- The nature of our web
site doesn't allow us to show prices and keep them accurately updated
without spending more time on the web site than I have available.
Our prices on major items are almost always about the same as the
major musical mail-order companies. Our prices on accessory items
are very competitive with other local stores.
Back to top of
page Do
you do Mail-order?
- You can always ask, but
often the answer is no. Our goal is to do a great job of serving our
local customers, and we don't feel we can meet that commitment if
we're always on the phone and packing shipments.
Back to top of
page Do
you do Repairs?
- Hometown takes care of
getting warranty service done on most products we sell.
- The
Music Doctor is a separate business located in the same building
as Hometown. He does repairs on Musical Instruments, Amps, Sound equipment
& Church Organs. His phone number is (540) 434-8428.

page Why
don't you carry more brands?
- Independent small stores
are not given the same options as the large chain stores. Not all
brands are available to us. Some companies won't do business without
order commitments that are not possible for us to fulfil.
- There are brands we don't
like, either because of inconsistent quality or poor value. Not all
companies run and promote their business in ways we consider fair
and ethical
- We try to choose products
from companies that offer consistent value and quality and do business
in a fair way that allows us a chance to compete with the mail-order
companies. I'm very pleased with the value, quality and selection
of the brands we offer. I use them myself. I understand that not everyone
will be happy with the brand selection we offer and that's OK. However,
I believe if you give fair consideration to the products we carry
you'll likely find something that does the job well for a very reasonable
price.

page Why
do I sometimes get an answering machine when I call during the day?
- We believe that the person
who is in our store should get first priority. If you've ever waited
what seemed like forever for someone to get off the phone when you're
cooling your heels in their office or store, you know how frustrating
that can be. We try to juggle as well as we can but we prefer not
to walk away from someone we're helping in the store to answer the
phone.
- I also understand that
it's frustrating to need a quick answer to a question and not being
able to get it right away. We do our best to get to the phone when
possible. If you leave a message we'll call back as soon as we can.
Or just give us 5 minutes and call again; we're usually available
by then. ...Or exercise all of the options: leave a message, and if
we haven't called back within 5 minutes, try calling again.
- Not meaning to be nasty,
but if you get the answering machine and immediately hit redial...
we probably still won't be available, especially if you're calling
between 4:30 & 5:30 on Friday which is on average the busiest
time of the week.

page Were
you Ace Music?
- I, (Chuck Marks the owner
of Hometown), worked for Ace Music from 1979-2000, most of that time
as store manager. When Bill and Becky Hunter, the owners of Ace decided
to retire from owning the store in 2000 they made a very generous
offer for me to continue the business. However, because I was only
interested in the musical instrument portion of the store we decided
it was best that they would close Ace Music. I would buy the remaining
musical instrument inventory and start a new store, renting the old
Ace musical instrument room from them.
- So Hometown Music is a
new business, officially starting business on April Fools Day, 4/1/2000.
There is a sense of continuity since I was there at Ace for over 20
years, and we try to treat Ace Music customers basically as if they
are Hometown customers. However on a practical and legal level we
are a new and different business, and we are not able to service any
of the video and stereo equipment sold by Ace Music. (Although I will
try to answer questions if he can remember back far enough)
- Bill Hunter still plays
in the band "Blue Sude"
and their web page is hosted on our Hometown Music site.
